Where are you going for your insurance? You do have to make it clear you have a kit car NOT a modified one. It should lower your premiums and technically normal car insurance companies shouldn't insure them as they are specialist vehicles. Like I said it was a specialist company/broker who do kit cars and quad bikes and the like. My uncle told me about them because he got his quad insured by them.

Anyway, the place is called Frank Pickles. This is their website http://www.frankpickles.co.uk/

Interesting, I'll see what they have to say when my renewal is due. Yes, mine is insured as a kit car under Footman James' kit car policy, this is a widely used company for kitcar policies.

My concern with the RS is that I would think most companies would consider this a modified car, after all, its a ford focus before and a ford focus afterward. Its only my opinion, but I think there is a huge difference between the RS/DTM kits compared to the 355/360/340/Murci kits and how they will be seen as far as insurance etc. The Focus and Mercedes are cars that folks would drive daily, the others for the majority will not.

Cheers

I see your point about the RS and DTM being just modified cars and I agree with you completely. I would have thought the comapnies believe it's just the bog-standard cars with a few tweaks, not one that is pretty much built from scratch.

But have a look when your renewal date is like you say and best of luck with it!

Just to add to this topic now I have an RS kit.

My initial post sums up the type of focus needed, in addition to what I listed you will also need

2008 onwards bootlid - Not totally necessary as the earlier ones will fit, but the profile of the back along with the number plate area is different.

2008 onwards mirrors. Again not totally necessary, but they will finish the look. 2008 on have indicators in the mirrors and kerb lights, so these will need wiring mods to make them work properly.

The front grille will need a modified lock mech. The standard ones are built into the grille moulding which wont fit into the RS opening. This should be relatively straightforward or if not I was thinking of using a remote release.

Rear lights will fit from the donor car, but are slightly different than those used on the RS. Im leaving mine till I find a cheap set on ebay, but they are just 2 screws and 30 secs to change so easy to do later.

Rear fogs are different so will need post 2008 ones. You can get a uk and EU reverse light and use a red bulb in one so that both are clear and look better.

Arch liners from originla car look like they can be used, but may depend on your wheel choice.

Rear spacers arent needed but a larger spacer block in-between the hub and axle pushes the rears out. These are available form ford or ebay.

You may need to remove the rear side windows which means working near the rear airbags. I am fitting the side panels without removing the windows so hopefully wont need to touch the airbag area.

I havent done much other than dry fit the panels as I have other cars that are higher priority, but so far everything fits together perfectly. The front end slots together and on the car in a matter of an hour or so. Captive nuts are in the rear spoiler which is fully assembled and these are perfectly positioned so it takes only a few mins to swap.

Will add some more pics soon, but any time I get time to go out with the camera its raining!! Car is outside at the moment till I restart work on it.

Im guessing both will be similar in build times/difficulty. Its just personal taste and resale that may affect your decision. I do like the DTM and have driven the demonstrator & it does ooze quality. For me though, its almost too exclusive. To a car nut or avid evo mag type reader it would be immediately obvious what it is, but the average man on the street would be oblivious.

The RS is a bit different, although it has a cirtain chav boy racer appeal, it is citainly not shy about making a statement. Everyone can see it is something that bit special & it will turn heads.

It depends what look you are comfortable with. If you are looking for something instead of your murci then go for the RS. If you want something for everyday driving when you arent in the murci that is still a bit special then maybe the DTM could be better.

Currently I would say resale on the RS is better, but they will only have a limited time for the appeal until either too many copies are out there or the price of the genuines drops.

So ultimately your choice!! But thats my 2p's worth
