MR2 MK2 converted into convertible.
« on: May 25, 2015, 10:31:44 PM »
I've seen a MK2 MR2 converted into a full convertible.
What's involved apart from just cutting the roof off?
Wouldn't you have to do some serious strengthing and reinforcing to stop the MR2 chassis twisting?
It does look good as a convertible but what's involved?

Could this conversion be added to a Murcie etc to turn it into a roadster?

Yes. It would be an incredibly serious amount of work. The roof is a structural part of the car that prevents the whole thing from twisting and bending. The A pillars, for example, aren't structurally designed to hold the windscreen without the roof to support them. Convertibles are designed from the ground up to be rigid without the roof and even then most suffer from differing amounts of scuttle shake.

IMO, you'd be creating a death trap if you removed the roof.

Ahh, the old convertible question.

Here's a little info about the great Mr2 mk2 design specs.
I'm glad you posted the convertible picture as this will help with the reason Extreme are able to chop up the Mr2 so much.

When the original mk2 concept was designed, it had to fill many criteria's one being the various roof options, so we have standard coupe, targa and convertible. The chassis is strengthened around the a pilla and rails to enable minimal alterations along the factory production line for all models, the original extreme murci designer went into great detail regarding the structural integrity of the car many years ago on this website.
If you have a DVD of the Murci build you will see that the roof is chopped completely off, there's a bit of either 20x20 or 25x25mm box section (can't remember) used from the top of each side of the window frame to the rear of the car just to hold the fibreglassed roof section.

So what does that mean?
Does it mean that the roof could be removed?
Surely the windscreen would just collapse fall in as its only got small box section in the windscreen pillars?
Wouldn't the mr2 chassis easily twist.

Here's a couple more examples of a MR2 MK2 with the roof cut off.
Ok so What would be needed to do this to a MR2?

Oh. This topic is just for discussion only.
I'm not doing any more cutting of my Murcie. LOL.
It was bad enough removing the mirrors.  :o
