IVA discussion continued............

I have been trying to keep out of this discussion as I am unsure of the route I will be taking with my Murci.

Extreme state that you do not need an IVA (SVA is no longer applicable). They state that provided the car has a valid MOT, is taxed and the Insurance company is fully aware of the kit and its modifications, you are legal. (EDIT - 11/03/10. Extreme have stated that you need to complete a radically altered vehicle test to modify the V5 & an IVA is not required)

I suppose the question comes if after an accident, the police consider the car to have been incorrectly registered. NOT unsafe, or un insured, but incorrectly registered.
If they do, then the insurance companies being the squirming barstewards they are, are highly likely to try to wriggle out of the claim.

When putting a car on the road you have to consider the following.
 
1) The police or DVLA etc need to know what the car is, engine size, details etc & who it is registered to.

This is already covered – The car is still an mr2 and in most cases all the details are the same (2 seat, 2 litre turbo etc. etc.). Worst case, you need to tell them it is a modified MR2 i.e. a special edition murci rep so when they pull alongside you on the motorway they don’t waste their time pulling you thinking you have fake plates or a ringed car. The original method was to declare it as a radically altered vehicle (SEE NOTE ABOVE, AS THIS IS THE ROUTE EXTREME ADVISE) and have it inspected to prove it wasn’t a ringer or cut and shut & you were fine.

2) The car is registered as existing and able to be a road legal car.  

Again this is already done, you aren’t adding a new car to the road, or cobbling together lots of other cars to make one new one, its just an existing one they already know about with its roof chopped off and replaced with a new one.

3) The car is safe to be on the road.

The government has devised a test to check cars aren’t unfit or unsafe & that they have a Ministry Of Transport certificate to show they are still road legal and safe. If your car passes the MOT, you have taken your MR2 for a professional check to ensure it is still safe to be on the road. It is treated as an MR2 at the MOT.

4) You have correctly Insured your car

You will tell the insurance company the type of car, the donor, the manufacturer of the kit and any mods you have done to the car. You have given them all information and declared everything including the fact it has not been IVA’d.

Given all the above, you are driving a modified car and have not lied or misinformed anyone. The car has been classed as road legal and safe by a government appointed inspector and you are correctly insured as you have told the insurance company everything.

So as Extreme state, you are road legal and this is no different to a mini that has had a 2 litre engine swap or a fibre glass flip front added, or a citroen Paxo where someone has put big wheels on & enlarged the arches to make them fit, or for that matter a 355 MR2 that has had the wheel arches modded (which 90%of them have).
In all cases the monocoque has been cut into but an IVA hasn’t been performed.

However - This is exactly as written in the direct.gov website

Kit Conversions
This is where a kit of new parts is added to an existing vehicle or old parts are added to a kit comprising a manufactured body, chassis or monocoque bodyshell. The general appearance of the vehicle will change and result in a revised description on the registration certificate.

A vehicle will retain its donor registration mark if either the original unmodified chassis or unaltered monocoque bodyshell and two other major components are used.

If a new monocoque bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit manufacturer is used (or an altered chassis or bodyshell from an existing vehicle) together with two major components from a donor vehicle, an age related mark will be assigned. The mark will be based on the age of the donor vehicle. An IVA, ESVA, SVA or MSVA test will be required to register the vehicle.
Where there are insufficient parts from a donor vehicle or in cases where the original registration mark is unknown, an IVA, ESVA, SVA or MSVA certificate will be required to register the vehicle and a 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.


So there are two ways of doing it, both will get the car on the road with an age related plate. In both cases you will have not lied to anyone & should be fine provided you ensure the insurance company is fully aware of ALL the modifications including cutting the roof off.
This is how ALL the 355 reps are dealt with and it is only the amount of cutting that varies between the 355 and murci. Im sure no-one has IVA’d their 355 so the argument would be why should you have to IVA a murci.

I personally don’t think there is any reason why the murci wouldn’t pass an IVA provided it is well built (and since based on the statement above it would get an age related plate)  so I am erring towards getting mine IVA’d for my piece of mind, but still undecided.

So bottom line is it’s the builders choice, but as Extreme state, you can get the Murci on the road without an IVA.
