Running in a new car.
« on: September 29, 2015, 07:44:33 PM »
Well it's been that time again when the 3 year pcp plan requires you to either hand the car back or buy a new one.
Well we (the wife) decided that she wanted a new one.
I'm leaving the make and model out as its not relevant to this post.
Now when I worked in the motor trade a number of years ago we tried a experiment.
We had 2 new cars exactly the same in every detail.
For the first 1000 miles one was given to a granny to run in. The other was given to a performance driver who had a lead foot.
When we got the 2 cars back once the 1000 miles were up the results were remarkable.
The car that the old granny drove around was so gutless and was pretty much hopeless. Where as the one that was thrashed from day one absoultly flew. Drove amazingly well and performed like a much bigger engine.
Now our new car. I would prefer to run it in briskly. But if I let the wife do it, it's going to be like the granny's car.
Have any of you had similar experiences and what would you do?

Running in is a load of tosh , and the harder you run it the more free the engine runs " when I worked at ford dunton research centre, all cars got put on a dino and run at full revs for 36hours !!!

That was when the testing of the Toyota engines and then the jag ones , just need to check oil levels .

Also motor bikes get the same treatment but if you go to a dealer they say run them in .

But to be honest if your just getting a run of the mill normal car , and it's just for potting about in, who cares ??!'

????????????

Hi.
Yes the dealer tells us to run it in gently. So the wife will do so. Me I would prefer to hammer it.
It's a performance hot hatch so I beleave that a briskly 1000 miles will benifit.

There's also a theory about a Monday and Friday car. One built Monday morning will be excellent. The Friday car will be a tub of crap even tho it's the same car.
I hope this ones atleast a Wednesday car but no later.
